Chic isn’t exactly the first word that comes to mind when we think of studio apartments. Instead, we think of a cramped dorm room. But if you’re moving into your first apartment, sometimes an open-plan space is your best option (goodbye, nosy roommates).
If you’re looking for a cozy, intimate space, you’re in luck. By using, soft, snuggly upholstered pieces, warm tones, and dramatic lighting, your tiny corner can become a wonderful private space.
[size=1.3]Downsize Your Furniture
Depending on how you use your living room, a two-seater sofa may serve you just as well as a full-sized one. If most of your work is on your computer, then a wall-mounted desk can stand in for a full-sized one. There’s scale to be considered too, a single oversized piece can actually help a room feel larger- but you definitely don’t want everything in your room to be oversized.
Add Height with Curtains
High ceilings can help a studio apartment feel less cramped. If you’re not blessed with soaring ceilings, you can fake it by installing curtains as far up the wall as you can. This draws the eys up and creates the illusion of more space.
Creatively Carve Out Zones
A wall divider or a bookcase in the middle of the room isn’t the only way to visually divide. Using accessories, art and other small details do the trick. A rug establishes the living room area. A solid white coffee table gives a heavy presence to the living room corner and anchors the zone. A yellow sofa becomes a strong focal point. What you’re lacking in space, you can make up for in style. Can you still see the bed? Yep. But it doesn’t feel like you’re living in a bedroom thanks to the visual strength of the other living zones.
Define Your Palette
Keep things cohesive by sticking to the same colour palette! Colour schemes in your home can change the depth and illusion of space. Light colours create a feeling of openness while darker colours create a more intimate and closed space. When working with limited space, you should follow the 60-30-10 colour rule. So 60% should be a neutral colour, in order to open up space as much as possible, 30% for your secondary colour, and use 10% for a bolder pop of colour.
Utilize Mirrors
There’s a saying: “go big or go home.” In the case of mirrors, don’t be afraid to put big in your home! The bigger the mirror, the more space it looks like you have. No wall space for a full-length mirror? Prop one up on your windowsill! Reimagine a gallery wall by swapping pictures and postures for coordinating mirrors of various shapes and sizes. This artful arrangement makes a big, spacious impact.
